Charnock Ridgeway FC fought back against Norton Inn as the game finishes 5-5 in a ten-goal thriller where two points were crucially needed for their pursuit to the title.
Luck was not on their side to start with as Norton Inn gained the momentum early to score two quick goals.
“First 10 minutes [was a] shaky start…,” Spick confirmed “Went two nil down to our own errors.”
But Charnock were adamant to get back into the game, and their previous chances gave the team motivation to push for a goal.
“Then obviously we brought it back instantly,” with Freddie getting the first goal of the
response and Marvin Gabou levelling the score before the whistle at half time.
Second half showed that Norton still wanted to win though and Charnock were not able to shake off the nerves as Charlie Spick conceded a penalty making it very simple for Norton to grab the lead again.
Charnock had previously proved that they were able to climb these mountains of challenges in this game and proved once again that they weren’t backing down from the fight.
Redemption from Spick and a goal from Daniel Round too gave Charnock the 4-3 lead they wanted to seal the 3 points.
The defensive organisation and individual errors were the main weaknesses in Charnock today as a corner taken quickly and a Brendan Dawson foul in the box gave Norton the advantage once again.
Charnock is their last attempt gain a free kick just outside the box and in true football fashion, Spick and a few deflections from Max Wilkinson and the Norton players give
Charnock the minute they so desperately need.
“It was a team effort… we then had a man injured so then we had the bare eleven towards the end.”
And the determination of the squad from start of them conceding the first two goals could not be questioned.
“It was a team spirit; we wanted to get the three points.”
Despite the thrilling nature of the contest, there was clear frustration around the players.
“I say it makes a massive help having the manager of course… but [it’s] obviously individual errors like with the set pieces [conceded].”
With manager Dom Parker absent, the team had to rely on themselves, and while their fighting spirit was evident, defensive organisation suffered at key moments.
The dropped points today have significantly dented the chase towards the league leaders and the main idea for the Charnock’s placement is securing 2nd in dominant fashion.
“Trying to cement that second place now and yeah, have a good end of the season.”
All in all, with an absent manager and a bare eleven for Charnock, it was clear that they
fought back with passion and team spirit while facing crucial disadvantages. And looking towards next week against Ecclesfield Red Road, return of players and the manager resolving the situation with the defence is essential for the last couple of games of the season.
